Group therapy for adults – in Brisbane and online

Group therapy for adults provides a supportive environment that complements individual counselling. Meeting with others who have experienced similar experiences can reduce isolation and allow participants to gain new perspectives.

Group sessions in Brisbane and online are closed groups to promote trust and continuity among members.

Depending on the specific group, sessions are scheduled either weekly over 8 weeks or fortnightly over 4 weeks during school semesters.

Sessions are offered either in-person or online.

Group sizes are kept small (4-6 participants), and a blend of structured activities and open discussions are used.

Groups offer a supportive environment where individuals can safely explore new interpersonal approaches and pathways to healing.

On occasion, I offer psychological educational groups for those interested in learning more about a specific topic area before committing to ongoing therapy.

Group therapy may be for you if you would like to:

  • Reduce the sense of being alone in your experiences

  • Receive support to decrease shame and self-blame

  • Foster hope through witnessing others' progress and recovery

  • Hear diverse perspectives, insights, and coping strategies that you might not discover on your own

  • Practice social skills in a safe, supportive environment while rebuilding confidence in your ability to connect authentically with others

Benefits of group therapy

The group setting offers opportunities to develop listening skills, foster empathy, and reduce self-focused thinking and emotional difficulties.

Members benefit from reduced social anxiety, improved communication abilities, and the development of conflict resolution skills. Motivation for change is strengthened through mutual commitment and accountability within the group, supporting progress toward personal objectives and therapeutic goals.

Group dynamics promote overall wellbeing and personal growth, while engaging as both a support provider and recipient fosters a sense of purpose, competence, and contributes to sustained recovery and meaningful connection.

I'm a registered social worker with over 25 years of experience in trauma and mental health counselling.

Group therapy can offer healing in ways that individual therapy sometimes cannot achieve. My role is to create and maintain a safe space where everyone can explore, heal, and grow together.

I also facilitate the group space so that members are supported and have opportunities to engage in the process.

What we explore

  • Boundary Setting and Maintenance

Identify where you end and others begin, practice saying “no" without guilt, and develop strategies to protect your emotional and physical space. Explore how to limit manipulation, control, and energy drain. Practice assertive communication and boundary setting.

  • Breaking Generational Patterns and Roles

Examine assigned family roles to examine how these patterns continue to play out in current relationships. Explore how family-of-origin dynamics influence your adult relationships and practice stepping out of these limiting roles. Discover how patterns are repeated.

  • Grieving the Family You Didn't Have

Process the loss of the family. Accept the reality of who your family members are versus who you hoped they could become. Develop realistic expectations. Distinguish between accepting family dysfunction and accepting the people themselves. Decide how much contact feels healthy and sustainable.

Frequently asked questions

  • Absolutely! Group therapy is very much still a vital and growing part of mental health treatment. It assists with addressing the loneliness epidemic, provides peer support, cost-effective, and effective for trauma, grief and interpersonal issues.

  • While group therapy can be highly beneficial, it is not suitable for everyone. Here are situations where individual therapy might be more appropriate: acute crisis situations, interpersonal issues, communication barriers, therapeutic readiness.

  • Pros include lower cost, strong sense of community and shared experience, and diverse perspectives from peers. Cons include less individual attention, potential privacy concerns, risk of personality clashes, and a collective pace that may not suit everyone.
