Supervision for counsellors – in Brisbane and online

Professional supervision with me encompasses three essential pillars that ensure both practitioner wellbeing and client care quality. These are reflective practice, developmental approaches and self-care support. Supervision is available for social workers, counsellors, psychotherapists, and other professionals.

How clinical supervision and mentoring can help

Supervision provides the opportunity for counsellors to reflect on their therapeutic work in a safe and meaningful way. Supervision also assists with ongoing development needs as a therapist as you continue to grow over time.

It also provides an essential space to explore self-care given that mental health work carries inherent emotional demands and vicarious trauma risks that require proactive attention.

Topics that may be covered in supervision

  • Case Conceptualisation and Treatment Planning

Explore how you understand presenting issues, underlying dynamics, and therapeutic goals. This includes discussing diagnostic considerations, cultural factors, and interventions based on client needs and evidence-based practice.

  • Therapeutic Relationship and Process Issues

Examine the dynamics between you and your clients, including transference, countertransference, ruptures and repairs in the therapeutic alliance, and how your personal reactions might be informing or hindering the therapeutic work.

  • Ethical Dilemmas and Professional Boundaries

Discuss challenging ethical situations, boundary considerations, duty of care issues, confidentiality concerns, and how to navigate complex professional decisions while maintaining therapeutic integrity and client safety.

What to expect during supervision for counsellors

Professional supervision provides counsellors with regular opportunities to reflect on their practice with an experienced supervisor.

Sessions typically involve case discussions where you will present client situations, explore therapeutic interventions, and examine your emotional responses to the work. Supervisors help identify blind spots, suggest alternative approaches, and ensure ethical standards are maintained.

You can expect a supportive yet challenging environment where professional development is prioritised through skill building and self-reflection. Supervision also addresses personal well-being, helping manage the emotional demands of therapeutic work. It is a confidential space for honest discussion about successes, concerns, areas for growth in your counselling practice and your well-being.

Hi, I’m Gretta. Experienced mentor and supervisor

As a counsellor with over 25 years in practice, I provide supervision for social workers, counsellors, psychotherapists and other professionals.

The collaborative nature of supervision often draws out alternate interventions, understanding and perspective taking that might not have been considered independently. Both reflective and developmental processes keep practice dynamic and prevents the complacency that can develop over time.

The exploration of self-care strategies enhances professional well-being and effectiveness as a therapist.

Experience & Core Qualifications relevant to my supervision:

  • 25+ years working in trauma

  • Accredited Social Worker

  • Social Work Bachelor and Master (with Hon's) degrees

  • Advanced training in trauma treatment

NB: Whilst I bring a polyvagal and somatic psychotherapy understanding and lens to supervision, I am not available to supervise in these modalities specifically at this time. I am more than happy to refer you to a supervisor who is providing supervision specifically in polyvagal applications and/or somatic psychotherapy.

Some questions you may have about supervision

  • Supervision ensures ethical practice, prevents burnout, and enhances therapeutic skills through reflection and feedback. It provides professional support, maintains client safety, promotes continuous learning, and helps counsellors process challenging cases effectively.

  • Consider if our supervision styles align, whether you feel comfortable sharing openly, if I understand your theoretical approach, and whether my experience matches your learning needs and professional development goals.

  • Yes we can still work together. I offer clinical supervision online via Zoom.
